After years I wouldn't think there would be a sudden spirital infestation. Poultergeist perhaps which are usually attached to people more then places. There is a much different method of getting rid of them

If it is a spirit, then what definitive proof have your friend of it's negativity? Is she sure that the spirit, assuming it is such, isn't trying to communicate rather than harm?
